What is Bullying
Bullying encompasses a variety of different behaviors. It can take on the form of verbal, physical, or emotional abuse. While we typically associate such behavior with children, any age person (even adults) can be a victim of bullying, just as any age of a person can be labeled a bully. At the middle school level, bullying is especially concerning because of the age of psychological development that a typical middle school student finds themselves in. Bullies can harass their classmates in such a way that forces them to do things, or think in ways, that they would not normally. They can literally become fearful for their life, develop hate for school, and in extreme cases can begin to question their very reason for living. All of these reasons can happen at the hands of a bully, even if the bully never lays a hand on the victim. Significant matter?

Bullying is a significant matter
Bullying can impact the livelihood of students. Victims of bullying often struggle with issues of self-esteem. In some cases, this might mean that they will harm themselves. In other cases, they may take their frustration over being bullied out on the bully themselves, and those around him or her. This can be seen in recent acts of school violence we have seen in the news in recent years, many perpetrated by individuals who have been bullied in one way or the other. It is important to note that bullies have been around for decades. This is nothing new. The methods behind the bullying, however, are much more advanced today. Individuals can become a bully to others that they do not even know via social media or other technological means. Access to weapons that can be used by victims of bullying is much more prevalent today. In essence, the stress level of the typical middle school student is far greater today than it was in the past. For these reasons alone, the issue of bullying at the middle school level is extremely important to discuss. It is critical that bullying not be tolerated in any form in order to provide a safe environment for all students to attend school.
Why should bullying be outlawed?
Quite simply, bullying is destructive behavior. It serves no meaningful purpose other than to tear down the self-esteem of the victim. As such, it should not be permitted in any fashion. Adults within a school environment need to actively look for ways to minimize bullying and help those that are victims of such behavior. Bullying on the Internet should also be monitored and made illegal as is the case now in several states. Only by outlawing such behavior, and providing real consequences to those truly guilty of being a bully.
